Conversion Rate

The share of visitors who take the action a page was built for — usually a call, a form or a booked appointment — measured as conversions divided by sessions.

Conversion rate answers one question: of the people who arrived, how many did the thing the page exists to make happen. For most local businesses that is a call, a form, or a booked appointment. It is conversions divided by sessions, and the hard part is not the arithmetic.

Briefly explained

  • The share of visitors who do what the page was built for.
  • You have to decide deliberately what counts.
  • Traffic quality moves it as much as the page does.
  • Improving it makes every channel cheaper at the same time.

What counts as a conversion?

Whatever you decide, as long as you decide once and stick to it.

If a tap on a phone number and a nine-second wrong number both count, the rate stops meaning anything. A workable definition for most businesses is a call over a set duration, a completed form, or a chat that left contact details. See conversion tracking for the mechanics.

Why is it worth more attention than traffic?

Because doubling traffic doubles cost, and improving conversion rate improves everything you have already paid for.

A page that goes from three percent to five does not just lift ads. It lifts organic search, the calls from your profile, the referral that was going to visit anyway. It is usually the cheapest work available, and it is almost always the work that gets postponed.

What actually moves it?

In rough order of effect, on a typical service page.

  • Matching the page to the promise that brought the visitor there
  • A visible phone number on mobile, not hidden behind a menu
  • Fewer form fields, and none that read like an interrogation
  • Proof placed next to the action: reviews, license, warranty, response time
  • Load speed, particularly on the pages ads point at. See Core Web Vitals.

Why does the number fall when things are going well?

The rate is a ratio, and the denominator moves too.

Scale a campaign into broader targeting and you reach people earlier in their thinking. The rate drops, the lead count rises, and the business is better off. Read the two together, or you will cut the campaign that is working.

What do the terms mean?

  • Session: One visit. The denominator.
  • Conversion: The action you chose to count. The numerator.
  • Micro-conversion: A smaller step, such as a click on a phone number, useful for diagnosis and misleading as a headline.
  • Bounce: A visit with no engagement. See bounce rate.
  • Landing page: The page a campaign points at, and the one where this number is most actionable.

Owner questions

What owners ask us about Conversion Rate

What is a good conversion rate?

+
It varies too much by service, season and traffic source to quote a benchmark honestly. Compare your own pages against each other and against their own history instead.

Should phone calls count as conversions?

+
Yes, and for most local businesses they are the majority of them. A site measuring only form fills is reporting on a minority of its leads.

Why did my conversion rate drop after ads scaled?

+
Usually because broader targeting brought less qualified visitors. The rate falls while total leads rise. Read both numbers, not one.

Per page, or across the whole site?

+
Per page and per source. A single site-wide number averages your best page together with your worst and hides both.

Is a very high conversion rate always good?

+
Not necessarily. It can mean your traffic is almost all people who already decided, which is a sign you are not reaching anyone new.

We fix the pages before we spend more on traffic — the offer, the phone number, the proof and the speed — because that lifts every channel at once.
