# Technical SEO

The part of SEO concerned with crawling, indexing and delivery — whether search engines can reach your pages, understand them, and render them quickly.

Technical SEO is everything that has to work before content has a chance: search engines finding your pages, being allowed to index them, rendering them properly, and doing it fast enough that a visitor stays. It is unglamorous, largely invisible, and the single most common cause of a sudden drop nobody can explain.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - Whether search engines can reach, read and render your pages.
> - Most local sites need the basics, not advanced work.
> - It decays with every rebuild, plugin and migration.
> - The damage is usually invisible until traffic falls.

## What does it actually cover?

Nearly everything that matters to a local business sits in five areas.

 - **Crawling and indexing:** robots directives, canonical tags, [sitemaps](/dictionary/xml-sitemap/)
 - **Redirects**, especially after a rebuild or a domain change
 - **Speed**, measured from real visitors. See [Core Web Vitals](/dictionary/core-web-vitals/)
 - **Structured data**, so the facts are unambiguous. See [schema markup](/dictionary/schema-markup/)
 - **Mobile rendering** and the accessibility basics that go with it

## Why does it decay?

Because sites change, and nothing announces what broke.

A redesign drops the redirects. A staging site is left indexable. A plugin no-indexes half the service pages. A new hero image never gets compressed. Every one of those is a Tuesday afternoon, and every one of them is invisible until the traffic chart turns.

## What usually causes a sudden drop?

In order of frequency, for local businesses:

 - A rebuild launched without redirects from the old URLs
 - A no-index directive left on from staging
 - A migration that changed URLs without mapping them
 - A hosting change that slowed the server response. See [hosting](/dictionary/hosting/)

Content problems take months to show. Technical problems take days, which is the useful diagnostic when something falls off a cliff.

## How do you keep it from happening?

 - Read the Search Console coverage report monthly
 - Re-crawl the site after every change, not once a year
 - Treat a launch as the risk it is, with redirects mapped before go-live
 - Keep a record of what was blocked deliberately, so nobody unblocks it by accident

## What do the terms mean?

 - **Crawling:** A search engine fetching your pages.
 - **Indexing:** Deciding to store them for use in results.
 - **Canonical tag:** A signal naming the preferred version of similar pages.
 - **301 redirect:** A permanent redirect, which carries most of a page’s value to its replacement.
 - **Robots.txt:** The file setting the boundaries for crawlers.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Technical SEO

### Is technical SEO a one-time project?
+The audit is. Keeping it clean is not. Rebuilds, plugins, migrations and new pages reintroduce the same problems, which is why it belongs in maintenance.
### How much does a small site need?
+Less than agencies sell. A fast, crawlable, correctly redirected site with clean structured data covers most of what a local business will ever need.
### What breaks most often after a redesign?
+Redirects from the old URLs, missing meta descriptions, pages left blocked from staging, and structured data that disappeared with the old templates.
### How do I know if something is wrong?
+Search Console tells you, if anyone reads it. The coverage report shows pages dropping out of the index long before the traffic chart makes it obvious.
### Is it worth doing before content?
+The basics, yes. There is no point writing pages that cannot be crawled or take eight seconds to appear. Beyond the basics, content usually wins the next hour of attention.Put this to work

Most Austin HVAC sites stuck at #4 in the map pack get diagnosed wrong. It isn't your H1, meta tags, or blog. Here's what actually moves the needle.

## The foundation, kept intact

Crawling, indexing, redirects and speed checked after every change — because the usual cause of a sudden drop is a rebuild that went live without its redirects.
