A Service Area Business, usually shortened to SAB, is how Google classifies a company that travels to the customer rather than serving them at a storefront. Instead of publishing a street address, the [Google Business Profile](/dictionary/google-business-profile/) hides it and lists the towns, counties or regions covered. Google still needs the real address to verify you. It just never shows it.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - For businesses that go to the customer rather than the other way around.
> - The address is verified privately and hidden publicly.
> - You list the areas you cover instead.
> - Distance is still measured from your real address, so reach has a limit.

## Who should be set up this way?

Anyone whose customers never come to them. If there is no counter, no waiting room and no sign on a door that anyone walks through, you are an SAB whether the profile says so or not.

The two mistakes are mirror images of each other:

 - **Publishing an address nobody staffs.** A home address on Maps invites visitors you do not want and risks a suspension when Google works out that nobody is there.
 - **Hiding an address that is genuinely staffed.** If customers really are served there during posted hours, that address is a ranking signal you have already earned. Hiding it gives it away for nothing.

## What happens to your address?

It stays in the account and disappears from the public profile. Verification still runs against it, which is why an invented address fails in a way that is expensive to undo.

One practical consequence: your position is still calculated from that point. An SAB does not rank evenly across a whole region simply because the region is typed into a settings field. See [local pack](/dictionary/local-pack/) for how distance behaves.

## How many areas should you list?

Fewer than you are tempted to. Google caps the number, and the cap is not the target.

 - List the places you want work in and can reach on a normal day
 - Use whole towns or counties rather than a scatter of ZIP codes
 - Leave out the areas you would turn down if the phone rang
 - Revisit the list when you add staff or a second location, not before

A service area stretched across an entire region does not extend relevance. It dilutes it, and it tends to attract the calls you least want.

## What should you do instead of inventing listings?

This is where most of the damage happens. A second profile in a town where you have no staffed location looks like an easy way in, and it is the fastest route to losing the profile you already have.

The honest route is slower and keeps working:

 - A real page on your own site for each place you want work in, with local detail on it rather than the same text and a swapped town name
 - Reviews that mention the area, which arrive naturally when you ask every finished job
 - Local citations and the odd local link from somewhere in that community

## What do the terms mean?

 - **SAB:** Service Area Business. The classification, not a setting you can fake.
 - **Service area:** The towns, counties or regions listed on the profile.
 - **Verification:** Proving the business is real and yours, usually by video or postcard, against the address you keep private.
 - **Proximity:** The distance between the searcher and your verified address. The one ranking factor no setting changes.
 - **Location page:** A page on your own site for one place you serve. The legal way to compete in a town you cannot list a profile in.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Service Area Business

### Should I hide my address if I have a counter customers walk up to?
+No. If customers are genuinely served there during posted hours, keep it visible. A staffed address is a ranking signal you have earned, and hiding it throws it away.
### How many service areas should I list?
+The areas you actually want work in and can cover. Google caps the number, and claiming half the region dilutes relevance rather than extending it.
### Can I create separate profiles for the towns nearby?
+Not without a staffed location in each. Duplicate or invented listings get removed, and the cleanup costs more than the short-lived gain. Pages on your own site are the honest way to reach those towns.
### Does Google still need my real address?
+Yes, for verification. It simply is not shown publicly. What you cannot do is give an address you do not operate from.
### Will hiding the address hurt my ranking?
+Not by itself. Distance is still measured from your verified address, so the practical effect is that you rank strongest near it and fade further out, whether the address is shown or not.Put this to work
