# Page Speed

How quickly a page loads and responds for a visitor. For a service business it can decide whether a customer on a phone reaches your contact details or gives up and tries someone else.

Page speed is how quickly a page loads and becomes usable for the person visiting it. People mean one of two things by it: the 0-100 score from Google’s PageSpeed Insights, or how fast the page actually feels on a real phone. The second is the one that counts. Someone with an urgent problem is not going to wait for a background video to load before looking for a way to reach you.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - How fast a page loads and responds to taps.
> - The PageSpeed Insights score is a lab test, not a ranking number.
> - Google’s assessment uses data from real visitors.
> - Speed helps, but relevant content still comes first.

## How is it different from Core Web Vitals?

Page speed is the general idea. Core Web Vitals are the specific measurements Google uses.

The three metrics cover loading, responsiveness and visual stability, and they are measured from real visitors. What each one measures, and how the report works, is on the [Core Web Vitals](/dictionary/core-web-vitals/) page. Page speed is the everyday word owners and developers use for the whole subject.

## What does the PageSpeed Insights score tell you?

Less than it seems. It comes from one simulated test, and it varies between runs.

PageSpeed Insights shows two kinds of data for a page:

 - **Field data:** What real Chrome users experienced over the past 28 days. The Core Web Vitals assessment at the top of the report is based on this.
 - **Lab data:** A single simulated Lighthouse run on a test device. This is where the 0-100 score comes from, and it is the useful part for finding what is slow.

Read the field data to judge the page. Use the lab data to debug it. A score in the red next to a passing assessment is not an emergency.

## Does page speed affect rankings?

Yes, through Core Web Vitals, but relevance still comes first.

Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, and that page experience is not one single signal. It also says good scores do not guarantee top rankings, and that a more relevant page can still win. A fast page with thin content can still lose to a slower one that answers the search. A slow page also loses visitors before it has loaded at all.

## How do you improve it?

Mostly by removing weight, rarely by adding a plugin.

 - **Images:** Compress the hero image and serve sizes that fit a phone screen.
 - **Scripts:** Load chat widgets, review badges and tracking tags after the main content, and remove the ones nobody uses. A script that swaps in a call-tracking number is the exception: it has to load early.
 - **Fonts:** Fewer font files, loaded so the text shows straight away.
 - **Hosting:** A server that answers quickly. See [hosting](/dictionary/hosting/).

Start with the page your ads point at, then the main service pages. See [landing page](/dictionary/landing-page/).

## What do the terms mean?

 - **PageSpeed Insights:** Google’s free tool that reports field and lab data for a single URL.
 - **Field data:** Measurements from real Chrome users over 28 days.
 - **Lab data:** A simulated test. Useful for debugging, not for judging.
 - **Lighthouse:** The testing tool that runs the lab test and produces the score.
 - **[Core Web Vitals](/dictionary/core-web-vitals/):** The three field metrics behind the Core Web Vitals assessment.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Page Speed

### What is a good page speed score?
+Passing the Core Web Vitals assessment matters more than the 0-100 number. That assessment uses data from real visitors, while the score comes from one simulated test that changes between runs.
### How do I check my website's speed?
+Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and read the field data section first. It shows what real visitors experienced, which is what the assessment is based on.
### Do I need a score of 100?
+No. Google says good scores do not guarantee top rankings and that relevant content still wins. Time is better spent on the content and on the parts of the page the lab test flags as slow.
### Why does my score change every time I test?
+Because the score comes from a single simulated lab run, and lab results vary from run to run. The field data, collected from real Chrome users over 28 days, is the steadier number.
### Is page speed the same as Core Web Vitals?
+No. Page speed is the broad idea of how fast a page feels. Core Web Vitals are three specific metrics Google uses for loading, responsiveness and visual stability.Put this to work
