Organic traffic is everyone who found you through an ordinary search result and clicked. It excludes ads, paid social, direct visits and referrals from other sites. It is the part of demand you own, and it is also the number most often quoted to prove something it does not prove.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - Visits from unpaid search results.
> - It keeps producing when the ad budget stops.
> - The headline number hides more than it shows for a local business.
> - Judge it on the searches that describe work you sell.

## Why is it worth building?

Because it does not switch off.

Paid traffic is a tap. Organic visibility is closer to an asset: slower to build, harder for a competitor to take, and still producing on the month you decide to pause the ads. That is the whole argument for it, and it is enough.

## Why does the headline number mislead?

For a local business, three things distort it.

 - **Map pack calls never touch the site.** The most valuable outcome of local SEO is frequently invisible in website analytics. See [local pack](/dictionary/local-pack/).
 - **[Zero-click answers](/dictionary/zero-click-search/).** Hours, phone numbers and quick answers get resolved on the results page.
 - **Branded searches.** People who already knew your name inflate the total without representing new demand.

A chart can rise for a year while the phone rings exactly as often as before.

## What should you judge it on instead?

 - The queries that describe work you sell, in the areas you cover
 - The calls and forms those pages produce
 - Profile insights and call tracking, read next to site analytics
 - Branded and non-branded split out, so the two stories stay separate

## Why is the growth slow?

What you are building takes time to be believed.

Rankings in a competitive local market come from a complete profile, a steady review habit, pages that genuinely answer the search, and a handful of local links. None of those arrive in a fortnight, and all of them keep paying afterwards.

## What do the terms mean?

 - **Organic:** Unpaid search results.
 - **Branded search:** Someone searching your company name.
 - **Non-branded:** Someone searching the problem or the service.
 - **Impressions:** How often you appeared, whether or not anyone clicked. See [click-through rate](/dictionary/click-through-rate/).
 - **[SERP](/dictionary/serp/):** The results page your listing has to survive.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Organic Traffic

### Do map pack calls count as organic traffic?
+Not in website analytics. A call placed straight from your Google listing never reaches the site, which is why profile insights and call tracking belong next to your analytics.
### Is more organic traffic always better?
+No. A hundred visits from people searching your services in your area are worth more than a thousand from an article that will never book anything.
### How long does it take to grow?
+In a local market, months rather than weeks for competitive service terms. Profile and review work usually shows movement sooner than content does.
### Why did traffic rise but calls stay flat?
+Almost always a mix problem. New visits are arriving on pages that answer questions rather than sell work, which is useful for reach and useless for this month.
### Does branded search count?
+It does, and it quietly inflates the total. Split it out, or you will credit SEO for demand your van and your reputation created.Put this to work
