# Direct Traffic

Visits analytics cannot attribute to a referrer — typed URLs and bookmarks, but also a large share of clicks whose source was simply lost along the way.

Direct is the bucket analytics uses when it cannot tell where a visit came from. Some of it is genuine: somebody typed your address or used a bookmark. A large part of it is not. It is a click whose source was stripped somewhere between one page and the next, and it usually belongs to a campaign you paid for.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - Visits with no identifiable source.
> - Part real brand demand, part measurement failure.
> - Untagged email, SMS and QR links all land here.
> - Shrinking it is mostly a matter of tagging and HTTPS.

## What is genuinely direct?

A short list.

 - Somebody typed your domain
 - Somebody used a bookmark
 - Somebody saw your name offline — a van, a sign, a recommendation — and searched or typed it later

For an established local business, this is a real and healthy channel. It is what brand recognition looks like in a report.

## What lands there by mistake?

A much longer list, and it is usually the bigger half.

 - Links in email and SMS without [UTM parameters](/dictionary/utm-parameters/)
 - QR codes on printed material
 - Links in PDFs and documents
 - Some in-app browsers, which strip the referrer
 - A secure page linking to an insecure one, which drops it by design

Every one of those is marketing you paid for, filed as though it fell from the sky.

## Why does it matter?

Because an unattributed visit cannot defend its own budget.

The seasonal email that quietly produced a dozen jobs shows nothing. The leave- behind with the QR code shows nothing. At the next budget conversation, the channels that happen to be measurable win the argument, whether or not they earned it.

## How do you make it smaller and more honest?

 - Tag every campaign link, including SMS and print QR codes
 - Keep the entire site on HTTPS so referrers survive the hop
 - Avoid tagging internal links, which overwrites the original source
 - Add a “how did you hear about us” field to the job ticket, and actually fill it in

What remains after that is closer to real brand demand. Watching that number grow is a reasonable measure of whether your marketing is building anything durable.

## What do the terms mean?

 - **Referrer:** The page a visitor came from, when the browser passes it along.
 - **Dark traffic:** The informal name for visits misfiled as direct.
 - **UTM parameters:** Tags that keep the source attached to the link.
 - **HTTPS:** The secure protocol. Referrers do not survive a secure-to-insecure hop.
 - **[Attribution model](/dictionary/attribution-model/):** The rule that decides which touch gets credit, once the source is known at all.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Direct Traffic

### Is rising direct traffic a good sign?
+Sometimes. It can mean brand demand is growing, or that a campaign lost its tracking parameters. Check what changed before celebrating.
### What sends traffic into direct by mistake?
+Untagged email and SMS links, PDFs, QR codes, some in-app browsers, and links moving from a secure page to an insecure one.
### How do I reduce the unattributed share?
+Tag every campaign link, including SMS and print QR codes, keep the whole site on HTTPS, and ask new customers how they found you.
### Should direct traffic be a big channel?
+For an established local business, a meaningful share is normal and healthy. If it is the largest channel by a distance, the usual cause is untagged links rather than fame.
### Can I tell real direct from lost attribution?
+Not exactly, but you can narrow it. Direct visits that land on deep pages rather than the home page are usually lost attribution, because nobody types a long URL from memory.Put this to work

Tagged links everywhere it matters, HTTPS end to end, and a question on the job ticket for the sources no analytics tool can see.
