# Conversion Tracking

The setup that records which clicks, calls and forms turned into leads or jobs, so ad platforms and analytics can attribute results instead of guessing.

Conversion tracking is the plumbing between what somebody did and where they came from. A tag fires when a form is submitted, a tracked number records a call over a set length, or your CRM reports back that a lead turned into a job. Without it, every decision about budget is made on the strength of a feeling.

> **Briefly explained**
>
> - It connects an action to the source that produced it.
> - For most local businesses, calls are the majority of conversions.
> - Broken tracking does not give you no answer. It gives you a wrong one.
> - It breaks silently, which is why it needs checking on a schedule.

## What needs to be measured?

Everything a customer might do to reach you, not just the convenient one.

 - **Calls**, with a minimum duration so hang-ups do not count
 - **Forms**, confirmed by the page that actually loads after submission
 - **Chats and messages**, including the ones from your profile
 - **Booked jobs**, fed back from the CRM so the platform optimizes toward work rather than toward inquiries

## Why do calls matter more than forms?

Because for most local businesses, the phone is where the money arrives. A site measuring only form fills is reporting on a minority of its leads, and usually the less urgent minority.

The practical consequence is worse than a gap in a report. Ad platforms optimize toward what they can see. Feed them only forms, and they will quietly find you more people who fill in forms and fewer people who call.

## Where do setups quietly fail?

The same handful of failures turns up again and again.

 - A thank-you page tag that stopped firing after a site rebuild
 - Calls counted at one second, so wrong numbers look like leads
 - Duplicate tags counting the same lead two or three times
 - A consent banner that blocks the tag before it loads
 - Browser restrictions dropping conversions that never reach the platform

None of these announce themselves. The report simply gets quieter, or louder, and the budget follows it.

## What does good look like?

 - Calls, forms and chats all measured, with a sensible call duration
 - Offline outcomes sent back from the CRM, so the platform learns from booked jobs rather than raw leads
 - One definition of a conversion, written down, used everywhere
 - Server-side where the browser is unreliable
 - A quarterly check that every one of them still fires

## What do the terms mean?

 - **Conversion:** The action you decided to count.
 - **Key event:** What [GA4](/dictionary/google-analytics-4/) calls the same thing.
 - **Attribution window:** How long after a click a conversion still counts. See [attribution model](/dictionary/attribution-model/).
 - **Offline conversion import:** Sending CRM outcomes back to the ad platform.
 - **Server-side tracking:** Conversions sent from your server rather than the visitor’s browser.

Owner questions

## What owners ask us about Conversion Tracking

### Why do Google Ads and my CRM disagree?
+Different windows, different definitions and different visibility. Ads counts a conversion inside its attribution window. Your CRM counts a job when it closes. Pick one as the book of record.
### Do I need call tracking?
+If most of your leads arrive by phone, yes. Without it, every channel that produces calls looks like it produces nothing, and the budget drifts to whatever happens to be measurable.
### What is server-side tracking?
+Sending conversion data from your own server or CRM rather than from the browser. It survives the ad blockers and browser restrictions that increasingly break tag-based tracking.
### How long should a call be before it counts?
+Long enough to exclude hang-ups and wrong numbers. Sixty seconds is a common starting point. Set it once, write it down, and keep it stable so the numbers stay comparable.
### How often does tracking break?
+More often than anyone expects, and always silently. A site rebuild, a new form plugin or a consent banner change can stop it overnight without a single alert.Put this to work
